Birmingham's Mercedes-Benz Marathon: A Legacy of Miles and Milestones

After more than two decades of pounding pavement through the Magic City's streets, the Mercedes-Benz Marathon crossed its final finish line in February 2023. The beloved Birmingham tradition, which drew nearly 10,000 runners for its farewell event, left behind a legacy that extends far beyond the race course.

Since its founding in 2001, the marathon weekend grew into much more than just another road race. It became a vital fundraising engine for The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs and other local charities. The impact was substantial - in 2022 alone, the event raised $175,000 for The Bell Center, contributing to over $3 million raised throughout its history.

Valerie Cuddy, the marathon's chairman who built the event from the ground up, reflected on the difficult decision to end the race's run. "No pun intended, but it's run its course," she said, acknowledging both the achievement and finality of the moment.

The race's significance extended beyond charity - it was also a Boston Marathon qualifying event, drawing serious runners from across the region. Over its 21-year history, more than 200,000 participants crossed its finish line, each contributing to the event's lasting impact on the community.

While The Bell Center will need to find new funding sources, its leadership remains optimistic. "We're going to be fine," said Jeannie Colquett, Executive Director at The Bell Center. "We're going to miss having that opportunity to be on such a big stage with the Mercedes Marathon, but who knows what the future will hold."

The end of the Mercedes-Benz Marathon marks the close of a significant chapter in Birmingham's sporting history. But perhaps its greatest legacy lies not in the miles run or medals awarded, but in the thousands of lives touched through its charitable mission. Sometimes the finish line is just the beginning of a new race.

While the Mercedes-Benz Marathon may have reached its finish line, Birmingham's running community continues to forge ahead with new traditions. The Bell Center has adapted by launching its own signature event - the Bell Center 5K on March 15, 2025, where runners can fundraise in honor of children receiving therapy.

For those seeking longer distances, Alabama's 2025 marathon calendar remains vibrant - the Railway Marathon in Fultondale and We Run This Beach Marathon in Gulf Shores are among several races filling the traditional Mercedes-Benz Marathon timing. From Mobile to Huntsville, the state's diverse racing venues ensure that while one cherished tradition may have ended, the path forward remains rich with possibilities for Alabama's running community.
